Story of Red Shedman

Let us take you back to 50 or so years ago:

It was a typical January evening; dark, cold, and windy. The young Aellen children were all in their rooms for the night. Snow was blowing everywhere, and the wind was howling through the eaves.

One of the older children heard a slight tapping from the bathroom. As the evening progressed, the tapping became more noticeable, and being startled by the noise; he alerted his siblings. As the sound grew louder, the children felt that surely a burglar was trying to break into the house. In their frightened state, they convinced their parents to call the police to investigate the mysterious sound.

The police arrived quickly. After briefly interviewing the children’s parents, they performed a perimeter search. The police concluded their search and, having found no footprints, determined no intruder had been present.

The children’s father assured them they were safe and returned them to bed. The children were not so easily convinced. At breakfast the next morning, their father tried to explain that the sound was merely winter’s fury. He personified the noise to have a bit of fun with the kids. And so The Red Shedman was born, a mysterious person who resided in the family’s red chicken coup. For years afterward, when something would bump in the night, their father joked that the Red Shedman was coming.

The children are now grown, and the red shed has long since been torn down. Every once in a while, on a cold, blustery night, when the wind is howling, they wonder if The Red Shedman is still lurking in the shadows.

This beer is dedicated to Jack Aellen - our beloved father.

Meet Our Brewmaster

Emily Rowe is our Lead Brewer here at Red Shedman Farm Brewery. She has been working in the brewing industry for three years, originally as a microbiologist and now as a brewer.

Her story starts in 2018, when she graduated from Salisbury University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. This gave her the foundation in science to understand the overall brewing process from lab to finished product. She became interested in the beer industry in college during a field trip to Dogfish Head brewery. Her environmental microbiology class was learning about the fermentation process and culturing yeast. After the field trip she bought a small homebrewing kit and pursued further education into the beer industry. In 2020, she graduated from the University of South Florida St. Petersburg with a Certificate of Completion for the Brewing Arts Program, which is accredited by the Master Brewer’s Association. In March of 2022, she successfully completed her United States Certified Beer Server exam, expanding her knowledge of beer tasting and serving. Completing this exam, in addition to the various tasting panels and events she has supported, has improved her understanding of what goes into a great tasting recipe.

Some fun facts about Emily are that she played rugby in college. She has a 1st degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do. She has published two papers in entomology journals with the research she completed in college. She has a 100-pound Newfoundland Poodle named Bear and a rescue cat named Jasper. Her favorite Red Shedman beer is Cosmic Punch and her favorite styles of beers are stouts and hazy IPAs.

We strive to give you the highest quality craft beers in the state. Come put us to the test!
